On October 13, I am running the Chicago Marathon in support of Equine Dreams, an Illinois-based nonprofit. I welcome your help reaching the finish line by donating to this necessary organization.
What is Equine Dreams?
For nearly 30 years, Equine Dreams has provided equine-assisted therapy to children and adults with differing abilities. Their work, which includes therapeutic horseback riding, interactive sensory activities, bedside hospital visits, and veteran programming, profoundly impacts the lives of approximately 1,200 individuals annually.
How impactful are donations to Equine Dreams?
Equine Dreams is a volunteer-run organization that provides services free of charge to ensure accessibility and affordability for participants and their families. It relies on grants and generous donations to continue its crucial work. Your donation will make a significant difference in these individuals' lives, allowing them to experience the life-changing benefits of equine therapy.
What is equine therapy?
Equine therapy is a form of treatment that utilizes horses and equine settings to support and aid individuals with various diagnoses. It offers a range of physical, cognitive, and social benefits. Equine-assisted therapy is unique in that it simulates three-dimensional movement like walking. As horses walk, riders' hips and spine rotate, helping the rider learn balance, improve motor skills, and strengthen their core and posture. Therapeutic riding also benefits those with sensory processing challenges or developmental disorders, helping activate riders' their five senses and even promote problem-solving skills.
I've personally witnessed the power of equine therapy. I actively volunteer as a horse leader and sidewalker to riders in my local community. There's nothing like seeing a rider gain confidence while learning alongside their peers. It is truly magical. I encourage you to watch the following video to see it for yourself:
Why do I run?
I've been running for nearly 10 years, covering distances ranging from 5ks to half marathons. Each year, I take on a different running challenge. Last year's challenge was to run at least one race per month. This year, it's the big marathon! I started running as my own form of therapy.
Running is literally and figuratively good for my heart. I ran my first 5k in 2015 and the sport became an essential form of therapy after my father passed from congestive heart failure in 2017. Running and caring for my heart health is one way I honor my dad. Also, having the opportunity to run to support an equine nonprofit is just as meaningful. Growing up, my parents would take our family to the annual state fair. I'd always look forward to riding horses there. My parents also owned a handful of horses. Being a family of dedicated horse enthusiasts, supporting an organization that spreads the love of horses to other families by raising vital funds is deeply rewarding.
Fundraising for Equine Dreams for the Chicago Marathon combines the healing I experience through running with the healing riders at Equine Dreams experience through equine therapy. Let's cross the finish line together.
Thank you in advance for your financial support.
