For my Mitzvah project, I helped my community by volunteering at Food Link, where I packed and sorted food for those in need. Food Link is an organization that focuses on helping to prevent food insecurity. The organization takes food that grocery stores and local stores do not need and repackages it for those who need additional help with food resources. “Mitzvah,” Hebrew for “commandment,” is often translated as, “good deed.” As part of my bar mitzvah preparations, I am exploring the Jewish value to “feed the hungry” (ma’akhal re’evim) by volunteering weekly at FoodLink. I have learned that nearly 19 percent of Massachusetts residents live with food insecurity, and more than 80 percent of Americans waste food every day. The more food that gets rescued, the more people can eat! Because of my interest and enjoyment with cooking and baking, this project means a lot to me. I want other people to have access to good food, and to let less food go to waste.

In addition to volunteering, I'm also raising money to benefit FoodLink, Inc. Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution!

More information about FoodLink, Inc.: Food Link is food rescue non-profit that reduces wasted food by using the power of volunteers to collect fresh food from food retailers & distribute it to local agencies. 100+ volunteers collect & distribute 1,000 lbs (360,000 lbs/yr) of food daily to alleviate hunger & support environmental sustainability. We partner with 12 local grocery & prepared food stores to utilize high-quality fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, bread and prepared foods that would otherwise be wasted.

My daughter and I are running to raise money for Food Link. We need your help!

If you can believe it, approximately 30-40% of food is wasted in the United States. So reducing food losses by only 15 percent would be enough food to feed more than 25 million Americans yearly.

Fortunately, Food Link solves this problem! They take healthy food (1,500 pounds of it each day) from grocers, cafes, and farmers that would usually be discarded and distribute it to kids, families, individuals with disabilities, seniors, veterans, and people without housing.

Today Food Link's 250 volunteers serve more than 100 recipient agencies and 5000 people throughout the local community, but they want to do more. Your donation will help them do that! Click here to learn more about Food Link and its mission.
