HIAS INC.

I am preparing to become a Bat-Mitzvah this upcoming June. As part of my preparations, I came up with a Mitzvah Project to show my support towards a cause. For my project, I chose to set up a GoFundMe to raise money for the HIAS foundation. 

HIAS is a Jewish non-profit organization which provides humanitarian aid and assistance to Jewish and non-Jewish refugees all over the world! Not only does this organization help with providing vital services to refugees and advocate for their fundamental rights, but they are also responding to emergencies wherever they occur. At the moment, HIAS is aiding civilians in the conflict between Israel and Gaza. HIAS is supplying displaced civilians and asylum-seekers in Israel from Eritrea and other African countries with urgent items such as hygiene products, blankets, school supplies, and dignity kits. They are also assisting in child protection, mental health support, urgent care, and much more.  

I chose this organization because a large part of my family immigrated to the US from the Soviet Union with the help of HIAS. HIAS helped them with resettling into America, and providing the support that they needed.

In choosing my Mitzvah Project, I thought about what mattered to me, and how I wanted to help the world. A cause that has always been close to my life is immigration. My father’s parents both immigrated from Iraq to Israel as children because Iraq was no longer safe for Jews. As adults, they both immigrated again from Israel to the United States. My mother’s parents came to the United States from Puerto Rico. All of my grandparents experienced coming to a new country and struggling to adapt to new lives. They had to learn new languages, build new careers, and confront racism and discrimination along the way. But with the support of their families and communities, they were able to pool together basic resources that allowed them to build a new life. Many migrants with young children who are arriving in New York and other parts of America need these same basic resources just to get by from one day to the next. Among the essentials they need are baby care supplies and first aid items, such as diapers, blankets, clothes, and hygiene products (e.g., baby powder, diaper cream, baby Tylenol, etc.). I am raising funds for HIAS, a charity that helps new migrants get those supplies by having volunteers like me raise donations, purchase the supplies, and assemble the packages to give to those in need. I am asking family and friends to please donate to help make sure that those children have the chance to grow up with what they need and experience the amazing opportunities America has to offer.

During my bat mitzvah study this year, I have been thinking a lot about my values and the impact I want to have on the world. One core value of Judaism (including humanistic Judaism) is Welcoming the Stranger, so I have been raising money and doing volunteer projects for an organization called HIAS, which stands for Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. HIAS works all over the world to help refugees regardless of religious belief rebuild their lives in their new homes, and advocates for the protection of refugees to assure that displaced people are treated with dignity.

I'm trying to raise $5,000 to help HIAS with their relief and advocacy efforts, through lemonade stands and asking friends to support this fundraiser. Would you help me in this effort? Together we can make a difference!

The war in Ukraine has been a personal tragedy for me, my mother and her family are from Kharkiv.

 

While we are witnessing the bravery of Ukrainians, we are also bearing witness to the unimaginable burden of those who have chosen safety. Countless amounts of people have left everything they know and love behind to seek refuge. With nothing but what they could carry, these Ukrainian refugees are in need of housing and supplies right away.

 

HIAS was the organization that helped my father and mother's family leave the USSR. Today, a HIAS response team was in Poland and is now in Ukraine assessing ways it can assist Ukrainians — both Jews and others — as they cross into Poland and other neighboring countries.
