Krewe of Red Beans

Every year Krewe du Vieux kicks off Mardi Gras by bringing its bawdy brand of satire to the streets of the French Quarter. What you may not know is that our 18 floats are accompanied by 20 different brass bands, who keep us dancing all the way. We'll miss parading this year, but we'll miss our brass band friends even more. That's why Krewe du Vieux is endorsing the efforts of Krewe of Red Beans to feed our culture bearers through their nonprofit.  

Musicians and artists have been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 shut downs, and no parades means an even harder winter for lots of them.  Through a special arrangement with KRB, every dollar you donate through this Go Fund Me link will go directly to provide food support to the brass bands that march with Krewe du Vieux! Our goal is to at least raise what we would have paid the bands for the 2021 parade, and hopefully a lot more. 

Brass bands are the soundtrack of this city. From second lines to weddings, funerals, parades, games, clubs, parties, backyards, porches, hell, even brunch.  Help us give back to the culture bearers who give us so much.

We are Catholic Sisters from Iowa, now living in New Orleans,
who live and work in Central City and LOVE Mardi Gras!
We know that the Mardi Gras Celebration will be different this
year so we want to do our best to stay safe and keep the
Celebration Alive!!

We are raising funds  to “Hire a Mardi Gras Artist” to decorate
our home.  This will help the artists who are struggling  
financially because of Covid-19.

Art and culture is the heartbeat of our great City. The artists
bring joy, creativity and beauty to every neighborhood.  In a
world filled with suffering, the float artists bring a creative way
to help us enjoy life for a moment.

Krewe of Red Beans launched "Hire A Mardi Gras Artist" on december 4th - they are transforming homes in New Orleans into "House Floats" 

Levy Easterly made his own house floats from 2009-2017 at his home in the French  Quarter.  He has since moved and bought a house in the Seventh Ward and  has not built a house float until the founder of Krewe of Redbeans approached him with the idea of 5 house floats in his neighborhood, including his own. to celebrate the lives of beloved New Orleans culture figures:
Mr. Slyvester Francis, Mr. Ronald Lewis, Big Queen Kim Boutte, Collins "Coach" Lewis, 
"These would be very special for  the Mardi Gras Indians, my neighborhood, and the rich-in-culture community of the Seventh Ward."

The Krewe of Red Beans - has been active during COVID. First, we created "Feed the Front Line NOLA" which raised 1.2 million and helped local restaurants - by getting food to our hospital workers (my wife is an ER doc at University). We created work for 35 musicians who delivered the food for 6 weeks. We did this without spending a penny on admin + all every penny was accounted for (no waste / corruption). 


we built the largest such effort in america. 6 weeks. 100,000 meals / coffees / cookies. 


I also learned a lot. how to build to scale. how to make things work ect.


Next Krewe of Red Beans created "Feed the Second Line" which is an ongoing effort to buy groceries for culture-bearers (mardi gras indians, second lines, musicians, artists). www.feedthesecondline.org

More information about Krewe of Red Beans: The Krewe of Red Beans is a 501c3 non-profit organization in New Orleans, la. We produce an annual parade and also have been raising money to feed medical workers during COVID.

Our little parade group (The Krewe of Red Beans) was one of the first in America to recognize the connection between Hospital workers getting amazing food - - - and supporting locally owned businesses. We began with a 60$ order of food to one hospital. 

Two weeks later, we were sending food to EVERY SINGLE   hospital in our city!
we are one of the hardest hit places also... (highest death rate per capita). 

We are 100% volunteer run. 0$ is spent on administration. 
every dollar we spend, we spend in New Orleans. We are supporting 35+ locally-owned restaurants, and we have hired out-of-work musicians as our "delivery musicians. They are able to make a living wage helping us. 

The hospital staff (docs, nurses, techs, cleaning-staff, and security) are not just getting food - they are getting some of the finest food our city has to offer. Mom n' Pop neighborhood spots + some really famous and amazing chefs....  as you probably know, New Orleans is a food-city, and our hospital workers deserve the very best right now!www.feedthefrontlinenola.org 

We would very much like to keep this going - esp. because.... we're normal people! There's no movie star or famous person behind this effort... just a team of very dedicated New Orleanians. ....

We are also open-source and happy to teach anyone in any city how to do what we are doing.
