LT Michael Murphy Foundation

WHOOP recently published a study that followed Dr. Alex Hajduczok’s journey attempting to complete 30 Murph workouts in 30 Days. I have decided to take this challenge on during the month of November while paralleling the No Shave November campaign. A “Murph” workout is named after Lt. Michael Murphy of Operation Red Wings in which Murphy and two other team members were killed in action while Marcus Luttrell survived to tell their story in the book “Lone Survivor” that has also been turned into a film. A “Murph” workout is as follows:

1-Mile Run

100 Pull-Ups

200 Push-Ups

300 Air Squats

Another 1-Mile Run

*All while wearing a 20 pound weighted vest that Murphy called “Body Armor”*

I plan on carrying this challenge out to test myself both physically and mentally while raising money for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation that, “was started in 2007 by Michael’s parents, Dan and Maureen, and Michael’s brother John. Michael was an avid reader and felt that education was key, in fact his favorite saying was “Education will set you free”. With the help of a few close sponsors I hope to raise as much money as possible and hopefully spread Lt. Murphy’s story as far as possible while testing myself each and every day.

We are very excited to announce that this Memorial Day, a team of co-workers from Clark Construction and Atkinson Construction are getting after it for an inspiring cause.  We are participating in the 2017 Murph Challenge which raises funds for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation (https://murphfoundation.org/).  From it’s humbled and honored beginnings of awarding one scholarship a year, the Foundation now awards 18 scholarships (more info below).  Michael was an avid reader and felt that education was key, in fact his favorite saying was “Education will set you free”.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, The Murph Challenge is an extreme "Hero" workout created by the members of the CrossFit community in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005 during Operation Red Wings. His life story has been the subject of two books: Seal of Honor, and Heart of a Lion, as well as two movies: "Murph: The Protector" and "Lone Survivor."  

The "Murph" workout (for time) with a 20lb vest or body armor is:

- 1 mile Run
- 100 Pull-ups
- 200 Push-ups
- 300 Squats
- 1 mile Run

This was Lt. Murphy's favorite workout, which he called "Body Armor". CrossFit renamed the workout "Murph" in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

The training and event day brings an incredible sense of meaning to "Murph" for each of us participating on this Memorial Day so we kindly ask for your support.



The LT Michael P. Murphy Scholarship Foundation is a 501c(3) Charity and there are no administrative costs.  All Board Members are volunteers so all funds are used for scholarships only.   The LT Michael Murphy Foundation 2016 Scholarships that were issued are as follows;

- Eight scholarships to Crew or family members of the Crew of the USS MICHAEL MURPHY DDG112
- Three scholarships awarded to graduating members of the LT Michael Murphy Sea Cadets
- One scholarship to send ten Penn State ROTC students to attend the Veteran’s Conference and LT Michael Murphy Valor Award
- One scholarship issued through the Purple Heart Association
- One scholarship issued through Mike’s college Alma Mater Penn State
- One scholarship issued through the Suffolk Federal Credit Union
- Two issued through Mike’s High School Alma Mater Patchogue-Medford
- One scholarship issued through Shoreham Wading River High School.
