MHAA has been providing a safe haven for abandoned and abused cats since 1990. Back in the day, the building was constructed on a shoestring budget and it’s durability has passed it’s prime. The roof of the sanctuary is in dire need of repair: the deck is failing and there are active leaks.  Interior drips are caught with buckets and staff work around them. We need to repair the decking and replace the roof shingles NOW!  We are fortunate to have some funding available for this essential project, but need all of you to contribute. Please donate what you can to provide our cats and humans with a dry shelter!

Johnny is our incredibly handsome poster boy.  He was adopted in 2009 and knew the love and warmth of a forever home. Much to his shock and surprise, he has been returned to us after his owner faced serious hardships. Your support allows us to be there for Johnny and countless others: special needs cats, FeLV positive cats, FIV positive cats, and cats that have been abandoned and abused. Amazingly, our doors remain open during a year of great despair and challenges. Covid has taken its toll on so many, and the impact on our pet population has been severe.

Mid Hudson Animal Aid works tirelessly to provide rescue and comfort to those in need. Our goal of $10,000 will be generously MATCHED by the Sidewalk Angels Foundation! Please find it in your heart to give what you can to bring hope and happiness to cats like Johnny.

Star Anise is a ten year old stray who requires immediate, life saving measures. She is in severe pain due to Pyrothorax, a bacterial infection in the chest cavity. . The vet believes that this was the result of a bite wound that punctured her chest wall, ruptured, and abscessed into the chest cavity. This sweet little girl weighs 4 and a half pounds and had 48 mls of pus drained from her chest today. If she is to survive, she must have a thoracostomy tube placed to flush and clean her chest cavity and remove pus as it re-accumulates.  This can only be done at a round the clock, specialty center. Star Anise is safe from life on the streets, but may not survive without specialized care. Please help us fund this vital procedure for this beautiful and deserving senior girl.

Four months ago Mid Hudson Animal Aid began Phase One of a vital building update to improve the health and well being of all in the shelter. Our thirty year old infrastructure was crumbling. When we  gutted our kitchen, laundry room and bathroom, a broken sewage pipe and a floor full of sludge was discovered. Staff and volunteers have had to use an outside portapotty for months, and our cats have lost free roaming of the shelter and are limited to the free range rooms. We have been fundraising for this project for quite some time and need your help to meet our goal.

The project cost is over $50,000. An anonymous generous donor was willing to match up to $25,000. We raised $5,000. The donor is now willing to gift the $20,000! Sidewalk Angels has once again stepped in to provide $10,000 in matching funds! That leaves another $10,000 for us to raise. 

While donating for structural repairs may not seem glamorous or life saving, providing a safe environment for our abandoned and abused cats is vital for their survival and that of our organization. Your donation means cats like Twinkle (our featured pic) have somewhere to go. Twinkle came to MHAA as a malnourished, sick kitten that had to be hospitalized for two days due to fever. She had abrasions and a bite wound that warranted rest and quiet. Without a fully functioning building, where will cats like Twinkle go?

MHAA has managed to stay afloat financially and also continue to adopt out cats and take in cats no one else will during these building challenges. We need to complete this work and reopen to the public to increase our impact on needy cats, especially with winter approaching!

Rocky is amazingly sweet and friendly despite the turmoil that has defined his young life. Rocky is 13 weeks old and was surrendered to MHAA with a right spiral humeral fracture.  His injury is severe and requires a specialized orthopedic surgeon if he is to ever walk again. Today Rocky is undergoing this emergency surgery to have a plate inserted to correct the injury. Little Rocky is in pain, but affectionately shows his gratitude.  MHAA  has unanswered questions regarding Rocky’s injury, but our priority is to provide immediate care to alleviate his suffering.  MHAA is always there for cats like Rocky when the world has let them down. The cost of Rocky’s surgery and treatment, although discounted, is enormous. But alleviating the pain of a young, injured baby and giving him the fresh and healthy start he deserves is truly priceless.   With your support, this adorable little boy will walk again.  Please donate and share!

Hubert is in severe distress. He recently was brought to MHAA and believed to have been hit by a car. He has no mobility in his back legs and going to the bathroom is excruciating.  Over the past 24 hours he has been flopping around, showing no mobility or sensory response in his back legs. Xrays, a cat scan and an emergency trip to the Animal Specialty Center in Yonkers to see a neurologist revealed  the unimaginable.

Hubert’s  6th lumbar vertebrae is fractured and his spinal canal is deviated.  Basically, his spine is broken and the pain level is extraordinary. Emergency surgery will give this 11 month old sweetheart an 85 – 90 % chance of full recovery of his back legs and the ability to walk. As always, the financial cost is prohibitive, but Hubert’s determination even in the face of pain is inspirational.  We can’t turn our back on this poor boy and hope everyone will feel the same and donate what they can to Hubert.

Matilda is a demure young girl with a rare condition known as eyelid agenesis, a lack of upper eyelids. She cannot fully close her eyes and her eyes stay dry and fur constantly rubs on her corneas. We have been managing her condition to the best of our ability until she is old enough for corrective surgery. She gets dry eye gel applied multiple times a day, has her eyes flushed with water once a day and has her eyelashes plucked once a week This condition is very uncomfortable for her and without surgery, she can develop ulcers and go blind. She needs corrective surgery to permanently fix this issue. The surgery consist of grafting skin from elsewhere on her body and creating eyelids for her. Matilda is going to be six months old and is ready for a new and improved life. Please donate, care, and share to make a better life for this doll.

Mid Hudson Animal Aid is experiencing a severe financial crisis. The future of our shelter is uncertain at best. We have cut our costs as much as possible without impacting the health of the cats currently in our care, but despite exhaustive efforts, we are struggling to meet our financial obligations and may potentially close our doors in the New Year.

MHAA has been a lifeline for abandoned and abused felines in the Hudson Valley for 28 years. We have rescued and found homes for thousands of cats and cannot imagine the impact on the community if we are unable to continue our vital work.

We cannot do this alone.  The future of our organization and the continued compassionate care of our residents are literally in your hands. If we are to move forward to 2019, your financial support and advocacy are vital.

Over the past six months, Butterfly has had multiple life threatening and scary episodes of open mouth, labored breathing and coughing. Each time this occurs, she has had to be hospitalized, monitored, and put on oxygen. She currently is confined to a cage in order to keep her calm and limit her activity, as any exertion may spur another episode. Months of testing, xrays, and a bronchoscopy have yielded the diagnosis of a narrowed, collapsing trachea. This condition is rare in cats and finding a vet who can perform surgery on her has been challenging. The only way to improve Butterfly’s quality of life is to have a stint surgically placed into her trachea to keep it open. A special size stint has been ordered and she is scheduled for the surgery next week. The discounted cost of this procedure is beyond what we can afford given our current financial situation. (We have taken in over 50 cats/kittens this month).However, we cannot deny this adorable, patient and loving young girl her chance to breathe easy and enjoy life. This stunning two year old longs to spend her days playing and running (as she did prior to the onset of this abnormality) and satisfying her every curiosity. Butterfly is a super friendly cat who will be highly adoptable once her breathing can be stabilized. Please support her treatment by donating and sharing.
