JJSE BRAAP Motorcycle Mechanics Program
We're excited for you to financially collaborate with us!
The mission of Small Schools for Equity is to support social justice education in San Francisco and beyond through professional development for educators and leadership development for youth.
Proudly located in the southeast side of San Francisco, June Jordan School for Equity and Social Justice (JJSE) serves predominantly working class communities of color. The mission of JJSE is not just to prepare students for college but also to prepare our graduates to be agents of positive change in the world. We believe students should be active in driving their own learning. Learn more about our community here.
Now that you know something about our community, it is a joy to announce that we've created SFUSD's and to our knowledge - the Western United State's, only high school motorcycle mechanics program and enduro training facility, located at June Jordan School for Equity and, right in our own backyard, at John McLaren Park.
As a school geared toward social justice, our mission is to engage urban youth in a unique, student driven learning environment that bridges historical economic and socio-cultural barriers in motorsports, with an opportunity to explore transportation and engineering careers.
During this past school year, we took huge steps towards achieving our vision of an onsite dirt bike program tailored towards the needs and wants of our student body. Through the support of friends, family, and generous donors, we managed to raise $20,000 dollars and then use this initial capital to create a motorcycle repair facility tailored specifically for dirt bikes that includes but is not limited to: hand tools, diagnostic equipment, specialty engine tools, stationary equipment, and so much more. Beyond our shop facility, we purchased 6 used dirt bikes (our first projects), a variety of student PPE, helmets, riding equipment, and the donation of nearly 50 yards of dirt for our enduro training facility.
Most importantly, we enrolled 15 students, and then immersed them in an A-G accredited motorcycle and CTE transportation curriculum emphasizing shop safety, preventative maintenance, drivetrain repair, and rider safety & training. Throughout the entire school year, students were challenged to not just learn the content conceptually, but to apply their knowledge practically in real-world scenarios common to this area of the transportation sector.
If you are interested in looking at some of the types of items we still need for our program, check out our Amazon motorcycle materials wishlist.
In addition to the items on our wish-list, we are planning on purchasing and converting shipping containers to use as an expanded classroom and shop space, as well as the materials to help us build and maintain our training facility.
For more info about our current accomplishments, 5-year vision, and/or materials you can share with others, feel free to contact the instructor, Andre Higginbotham at the following email: [email redacted]
No raffles, sweepstakes, giveaways, or promotions are offered in exchange for any donations made to this GoFundMe.
