Hi, I am Auna Litzen, a sophomore from Gallatin High School and I am super excited to be able to be a part of the small group of students going on the Montana Tanzania Exchange. This is a once in a lifetime experience that will impact the rest of my life. I have always had a passion for helping people and I love traveling, seeing new places, and meeting new people. Soccer is also a huge part of my life. I play both high school soccer and club soccer as a goalkeeper. Through soccer I have met lifelong friends, had unforgettable experiences, and learned to work hard for what I want, whether it be a spot on a team or to simply make a save in a game. Being a goalkeeper requires strong leadership and a passion for the game. This exchange is a great opportunity for me to use and grow these skills on a international level. Through this trip to Tanzania I would love to form new relationships, see new cultures and parts of the world, and help to improve the lives of people in Tanzania.
In the summer of 2024 I was fortunate to go on a trip to Costa Rica with my high school team. It truly was life changing, altering my appreciation for the life I live, but one part had a massive impact on me. As a team we visited a small underprivileged school and ran a small soccer clinic. From the instant we walked in the doors I knew this was a long awaited day for these kids. There were many classrooms full of kids peeking out the doors and waving at us; I clearly remember all of the smiles from those kids. Many didn't speak much English which made communication with them hard, but I will never forget the laughter in that room of kids. Some of the other girls and I speak a decent amount of Spanish, but not enough to carry on a full conversation with the kids that didn't know that we couldn't understand them. It warmed my heart seeing how the kids were all so happy and as we were leaving, they swarmed us giving everyone hugs. It was neat to see how much of an impact we had on them but the greatest impact was definitely on us. I am hoping that on our trip to Tanzania we will be able to make these same types of memories and have the same impact.
Montana Tanzania Exchange Chapter 3: “Planting Roots” is an international soccer and cultural exchange with local youth athletes immersing themselves in a foreign culture driven by service. By providing opportunities to work together, we will improve and enhance young lives.
This summer, led by the Montana Futbol Foundation, 24 high school soccer players, and professional coaches, trainers, teachers, a doctor, referee, and an engineer from Montana will volunteer at the New Vision School and Sports Club in Arusha, Tanzania.
Our work supports young people from Montana working alongside young people from Tanzania to find innovative solutions to challenges within local Tanzanian communities. This project will serve as an opportunity to break barriers and bring young people together to navigate cultural differences and solve problems together. Furthermore, it will strengthen character and foster leadership skills through rigorous service. Because of The Montana Tanzania Exchange, our youth will come back to Montana with learned strategies to impact our local communities, as future leaders in our global community.
New Vision serves over 200 students, aged 6-26, living in extreme poverty and at high risk for gang recruitment. The 45 Montana volunteers will spend two weeks working with New Vision to:
~Improve the soccer field for the school - with an emphasis on regenerative farming and an educational element
~Complete a regenerative farming project: closed loop nutrient cycling, water conservation management, chemical-free pest management, and an Agri-Business element
~Provide clinics in coaching, refereeing, fitness, and sports medicine for the New Vision staff and players
~Host a women's Pamoja Classic tournament to advance women's football in Africa
~Conduct educational classes for players with a focus on collaborative problem solving, where our MT players will participate with New Vision players as peers. The subjects will be, but not limited to, language, engineering, life skills, and geography. The goal is to have “student directed” but “teacher guided” instruction led by MT project Leaders and New Vision Staff.
I am so excited to represent not only the United States, but also Montana in this exchange. Any amount of donation will be very appreciated and go straight towards travel costs and other equipment needed. Your donation towards me and the program will not go unnoticed and I am so grateful for anything you are able to give. The donation is also tax deductible as it goes directly to the non-profit. Thank you for your consideration.
