Dr Andrea Shuck asked if SaveTheHorses would take a donkey with a gnarly wound. Of course, we said , 'yes'. It sounded like he really needed help. Poncho was an hour and a half away from the rescue. Ann Green volunteered to transport. The owners loved him, but couldn't afford the care he needed. Once you actually see the wound, you scratch your head and wonder what started this and how to fix it?
This is what Dr Shuck wrote

Poncho arrived October 12th. We started cleaning the wound and making Poncho comfortable, getting to know him and saying many prayers. Looking at the damage, it looked as if a wire cut him all across his rear end. The left side was scared and closed but the right side with open, smelled and was oozing. October 16th, Dr Thompson and one of his associates, (sorry I forgot her name).cleaned out and started the healing process. They also took radiographs to see if they could see some bone fragment of bone causing it to not close. We continued treatment until Dr Andrea and Dr Jennifer came out on Oct 25 and even more aggressively debrided the wound even more. They opened up a new area for drainage.
I sent pictures and information to Dr Peroni, surgeon at UGA, for his opinion. He suggested a CT Scan to see deeper into the wound. Why has this wound been opened since December 2023? October 30, I transported Poncho to UGA so they could do a CT Scan today. Dr Peroni called me last night and after doing a physical exam, suggested not to do a CT Scan. He thinks he can do surgery to open the wound further and check the bone and tissue for infection. Then open the area to drain as we flush it out here at the rescue and let it then continue healing and finally close. Let's hope for the best today.
We are so lucky to have so many compassionate veterinarians here to help with such odd cases as they come through SaveTheHorses. They are all successful, even if there is no option but to euthanize. They leave here in loving arms and hearts filled with mercy.
