Hi, my name is Safir Khandaker, and I am a youth leader at Distressed Children International, or DCI. Although I was born in Maryland, I lived in Bangladesh for half of my life. I’ve witnessed firsthand the poverty that plagues many villages in Bangladesh. Many orphans exist in these villages who aren’t able to buy basic necessities. I’ve always felt I should find a way to help them, but I never knew how.

After finding DCI, I immediately knew I wanted to help. DCI’s mission is to create a future where “all children have a chance at a dignified and successful life.” I read the story behind DCI founder Dr. Hoque and how he created a volunteer group that supported families as a teenager. It inspired me.

Bangladesh has an estimated 4–5 million orphans, many of whom lack access to basic needs. My goal is to raise money to ensure these orphans receive necessities in order to live a healthy life. Hello! I am Arvaneh Jamil and I am a volunteer at Distressed Children and Infant International (DCI). DCI is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping underprivileged children all around the world. DCI’s mission is to help children escape poverty through education, healthcare, and proper housing. My name is Zikra Rahman and I am an intern at DCI: https://distressedchildren.org/, a non-profit organization that seeks to help children in distress all around the world, established at Yale University and headquartered in Cambridge.

Recently, Bangladesh has been engulfed in the worst flood in its history. Many homes were destroyed, many people died, many families and pets were separated, and many children are struggling to find proper food and medicine.

As a Bangladeshi myself, this situation has hit close to home. I keep hearing phone calls from my loved ones and family, and those of my friends affected by these floods. And it hurts even more that around 5 million other people are also directly affected!

Currently, DCI has many volunteers working tirelessly to provide emergency aid to all those affected (food, water, shelter, oral saline, emergency medicine, water-purifying tablets); however, we are in dire need of funds.

So I request if you could please spare some time in your day to help everyone affected, your efforts will not be in vain. Please, feel free to donate as much as you are able to, and remember, every little bit counts! If you can only spare five dollars, then five dollars will still make a difference! Hi! My name is Claudia Jankovich, and I am a youth leader/volunteer with Distressed Children and Infants International. I created this gofund me to raise awareness about the global issues they aim to impact, as well as share my story in the hope that you will be inspired to donate to help this incredible nonprofit continue their programs.

DCI is a nonprofit organization with the mission to help underprivileged children and their families in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Nicaragua. This nonprofit supports these communities in many different ways, including receiving access to education, healthcare, and other amazing opportunities.

My connection to this organization is through my ophthalmologist of almost 19 years, Doctor Brian DeBroff, as seen beside me in the picture. Dr. DeBroff is the President of this nonprofit and after hearing my passion to make a difference, he connected me with the Executive Director, Dr. Ehsan Hoque, and encouraged me to become a volunteer. Since doing this, not only have I learned more about their mission, but I have become extremely passionate about it, making it a goal for myself to raise awareness by sharing my story so others can see how crucial their work is.

My story starts at six weeks old when I was diagnosed with a unilateral congenital cataract in my left eye, a rare diagnosis for a newborn. Just two weeks later, I went into surgery with Dr. DeBroff where he was able to successfully remove the cataract and replace it with a lens implant, also called an intraocular lens. I have battled vision challenges throughout my childhood, having a lazy eye, enduring patching therapy, having no depth perception, experiencing monocular vision, and being monitored for numerous eye conditions I am at risk for, all at a young age.

At 16, once my eye was fully developed, Dr. DeBroff offered me the opportunity to further improve my vision by replacing the original implant, with a larger and newer one that would better fit my eye, and could offer me improved vision. After enduring this surgery and recovering with better vision, not only did my quality of life improve, but so did my appreciation for having the vision I do.

My disability might always challenge me, and I may not know what the future will hold, but today I am able to read 20/50 without correction in my left eye, and 20/20 with correction which is a miracle that allows me to live a happy and independent life. If it wasn’t for my parent’s health insurance and the original surgery Dr. DeBroff performed, I would be blind in my left eye today.

With the Blindness Prevention program DCI offers, they aim to make vision care accessible to all, educate individuals about eye health, and be able to provide crucial eye treatments to those in need including cataract surgery. Hello! My name is Rithika Praturu, and I am a volunteer intern at Distressed Children and Infants International, also known as DCI. Since hearing about DCI’s mission to support children, I have been dedicated to the mission of this non-profit organization and helping it grow. DCI has been working tirelessly to support impoverished children and give them the opportunities needed to be successful in this world.

Because of DCI’s efforts, children who were in danger of dropping out of school to support families are now getting the education they deserve. Many have been taken off the streets and given a chance at a better life. Unfortunately, there are many more children that need our support, especially because of the major economic disruption caused by the pandemic.

The last two years have caused countless more difficulties for the young children we are trying to save, and it is critical we work to give them the future they deserve.

Please help me reach my goal of raising $3000 by the end of 2021 to support the children and their dreams. The funds we raise will be used to provide education support for the girls of DCI orphanage giving them access to higher education and to the opportunities many of us have.
